Cypriot sea turtles

A female green turtle laying her eggs on a beach in the northern part of Cyprus.

I’m overseas at the moment, gathering tape for a variety of stories including one about the sea turtles of Cyprus. I spent the evening on Alagadi beach in the north a couple nights ago. And I recorded volunteers with the Turtle Project who were monitoring and measuring the loggerhead and green turtles laying their eggs on the beaches. There was lots of activity between 11p and 330a. I snapped this photo of one of the green turtles who was nesting around 2 in the morning. You can see a few barnacles on her shell.

  1. It is an amazing photograph but from my perspective it looks more like she has had a large portion of her head ripped off leading to the assumption she is deceased….it is amazing how the same picture can be seen and draw so many different conclusions.
